Gaggia

September 5 1939 Milanese bartender Achille Gaggia patented a steam-free coffee machine that foreshadows the modern espresso.

Gaggia's design used a revolutionary piston mechanism that forced the water through grounded coffee at high pressure. It took only 15 seconds to make an espresso. Gaggia probably got the idea after having observed the engine in a jeep from the US army, which used a hydraulic system.
